My national fraternity does this each year...


3 teams bike across America, 2 from San Francisco to DC on north/south routes and one goes from Seattle to DC. About 20 riders a team, 10-15 support staff per team, and all of them have to raise a minimum of $4k to ride for the philanthropy. Basically raise about $300K off of this event alone for the organization.

Wanted to do it but never pulled the trigger on it. Helped with mail stops and local support over the years in the various areas I've lived that they come through. VT chapter has sent numerous riders throughout the years and tends to have one of the highest participation rates on the teams.
